The Fragmentation of Innovation

In May 2015 I was in 'Techinasia' Singapore, the event that connects technology and start ups with the Asian Pacific market. I saw more than 20 different new mobile applications, more than 50 new digital web platforms, and more than 15 productivity websites, many of them offering exactly the same solution for the 'same' problem.

In addition to that, as I perused their offerings I discovered some are targeting too small an audience and others are looking at just a part of a problem instead of the whole...

Why are start ups are so disconnected and fragmented?

There is a real opportunity to improve.

What if startups connected to avoid fragmentation? Working together, could we come up with a bigger, stronger solution? What if we created [like eg] an API, which the user can activate to clearly identify its needs? For instance, in Singapore, if you want a dinner promotion, you have Groupon, Eatigo, Hungrygowhere, etc... Instead of asking the consumer to spend the time downloading different applications and checking sometimes duplicated promotions, we gave them a better -enhanced experience? What about ONE ultra personalized and extraordinary service? What if all the efforts of all the companies were concentrated on one?

In theory my proposal runs afoul of the ‘economics/ competitors’ free market, but, if we want to be truly innovative, maybe we have to start with ourselves first...

I challenge all new start ups to be open sourced and embrace sharing!

Lets build this together.
