Nostalgic of the Future

Sometime ago, a colleague gave a presentation and talked about how he missed the music, culture and freedom of the 1970s. When we are nostalgic, we are referring to the past, something that we have experienced. Nostalgia comes from the Greek, nóst (os) meaning to return home and -algos meaning pain. While he was presenting,I realized I was nostalgic about something I haven’t yet experienced and most surely I won’t experience. I was Nostalgic of the Future.

I’m talking about the era of Robots. The ‘real’ era of AI. I’m so sad, knowing that I’ll not be here to see the evolution of our humanity to something smarter, better, enhanced.

I’ll not be able to travel to Mars for my holidays or have a robot as a part of my family. Why hasn’t Virgin taken me to Mars yet!?

I’m Nostalgic for the Future, I’m nostalgic for our imagination, I’m nostalgic for what could happen and I will be not able to see.

But how it can be possible? How we can be nostalgic for something that we haven’t experienced yet? Is it just that nostaligia that will push us to create it in our lifetime?...
